About Khun De (Batu Lanchang)

Khun De (Batu Lanchang) is a Thai restaurant in George Town that feels easy to recommend when someone asks for a casual place with bold flavours and a relaxed setting. Located at 80 C, Jln Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, Taman Koperasi Jelutong, 11600 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, this spot is convenient for anyone around Batu Lanchang, Jelutong, or nearby neighbourhoods who wants a simple meal without making things complicated. The restaurant carries that friendly Thai dining vibe where the food is meant to be shared, so it works well for lunch with friends, dinner with family, or a quick stop when you are craving something savoury, spicy, and comforting. One thing that makes Khun De (Batu Lanchang) practical is the range of service options. You can dine in when you want the full restaurant experience, choose outdoor seating when the weather feels right, grab takeout when you are busy, or use delivery when staying in sounds better. Onsite services also make it feel more flexible for different dining needs. The menu offerings add to the casual appeal, with small plates that are great for tasting a few dishes, along with drinks such as coffee, beer, and alcohol for those who want something extra with their meal. Because the place is built around Thai food, it naturally suits people who enjoy bright flavours, aromatic herbs, rich sauces, and dishes that bring a bit of heat without feeling too formal. I would introduce Khun De (Batu Lanchang) as the kind of neighbourhood Thai restaurant that is easy to visit, easy to order from, and easy to enjoy. It has a straightforward charm, a comfortable setup, and enough variety to suit both quick meals and slower dining moments, especially for anyone searching for Thai food in Batu Lanchang or George Town.

This is, first and foremost, an authentically flavored Thai restaurant. The Tom Yum Goong is a perfect example, as it masterfully preserves the pure, traditional essence and flavor profile. What truly sets it apart is the sourness: the soup is remarkably and delightfully sour, much more so than at most other Thai establishments, making it genuinely invigorating. Many of the stir-fries were also impressive, exhibiting excellent 'Wok Hei' (the fragrant, smoky flavor imparted by a hot wok). This was especially noticeable in the stir-fried fern shoots, the Pad Sen Mee (fried vermicelli/glass noodles), and the Pad Krapow (Holy Basil Stir-fry). The generous portions are another definite plus. Furthermore, the unique pairing of sour mango and fried fish is a brilliant, palate-cleansing highlight. The presentation is noteworthy: a bowl of tart mango pieces is only poured over the freshly fried seabass upon serving. This clever technique ensures the fish retains its wonderful crispness while the mango's refreshing fruit aroma and acidity perfectly cut through any richness. The only minor drawback was the texture of the squid in the Pineapple Fried Rice; it was too soft, which slightly detracted from the overall mouthfeel of the dish. Overall, a highly recommended spot for genuine Thai cuisine.

The steamed red snapper lemon chilli fish was the star of the night; spicy enough without being too sour. I found the paku vege or fern kinda hard, maybe it was a bit old. Anyway, happy to find another Thai restaurant that I can go to in future.

Food are all good, especially the cai por fried fish. Portion just nice. One of my family's favourite place for dinner. We would surely return for more family gathering. Just that when there are more people who talk loudly, it's kinda noisy in the whole restaurant.

I'm happy to say that this restaurant is back to providing it's original taste and that is very good! The food is freshly made and prepared on the spot, taste is authentic and packs a real flavorful combination of aroma and fragrance. In particular, the otak otak was great with seafood and cooked with fresh basil leaves, such an excellent combination of spices together. Lastly the plum sauce steam fish had a very strong sour and slightly spicy taste, I almost took a spoon to keep drinking the gravy like it's a soup. Come here for a good and reasonable priced meal, remember to make a reservation before coming here.

Homestyle restaurant, parking is a big problem, need to turn a few corners before you can get one. Food is delicious and tastes quite different from other Thai restaurant. Price after tax is slightly higher than market.
